Abstract
The objects of this study was to investigate maxillary gingival and palatal mucosal carcinoma as the same entity. In case of maxillary sinus carcinoma, many authors reported their clinical behavior and prognosis but maxillary gingival and palatal
mucosal carcinomas had seldom mentioned for their short case number. So we expect that this study will be contributed to the exact diagnosis and improving cure rate of the maxillary gingival and palatal mucosal carcinoma. Subjects was 92 patients
who
were diagnosed as maxillary gingival or palatal mucosal carcinoma from 1985 to 1994 in the Seoul National University Hospital. Average age was 53.6 years and male was 62 (67.4%) and female was 30 (32.6%) thus male to female ration was 2.67 : 1.
Methods
were review of chart and roentgenographic data and pathologic reports and followed up at lest 1 year and at most 10 years.
@ES The results were as follow.
@EN 1. In histopathologic findings, squamous cell carcinoma was 57 cases and mucoepidermoid carcinoma was 13 cases and others 22 cases. Among the others, we found the second primary cancer 4 cases.
2. In TNM classification, stage 1 was 6 and stage 2 was 19 and stage 3 was 10 and stage 4 was 52.
3. 3. As the treatment modality, combinded with radiation therapy and chemotherapy and surgery was done to the 6 cases and among 3 treatment modalities, 2 treatment modalities was done to the 12 cases and only surgery 29 cases radiation therapy
or
chemotherapy 12 cases and no treatment cases were 33.
4. By Kaplan-Meier method, 2 year survival rates was 91% and 5 year survial rates 73.1% in the neck node negative group. And 2 year survival rates was 21.6% and 5 year survival rates 10.8% in the neck node positive group.
In conclusion, we found higher survival rates in the maxillary ginival and palatal mucosal carcinoma than those of the other intraoral carcinoma in the Korean and the appropriate neck node treatment was determinate to their good prognosis.
